Plain Sawn
- May contain any
combination of the following types of grain classification: Plain Sawn, Rift
Sawn, and Quarter Sawn.

Quarter Sawn
- In cross section, the
angle of the annual ring tangent to the face of the piece is between 45° and
90°. At least 50% of the piece contains Quartered characteristics
which include grain lines that are mostly parallel to the length of strips
and medullar ray flecks present and more than 1/16" wide.

Rift Sawn
- In cross section, the angle
of the annual ring tangent to the face of the piece is between 30° and 60°.
At least 75% of the piece contains Rift characteristics which include grain
lines that are mostly parallel to the length of strips and medullar ray
flecks less than 1/16" wide.

Rift & Quartered
- A combination of Rift
Sawn and Quarter Sawn.
Available Grades

Clear
- Contains mostly heartwood with a
minimum number of character marks and discoloration providing a uniform
appearance while allowing for all heartwood natural color variations.
Average bundle length is 3-3/4'.

Select &
Better
-
Contains coloration variations produced by differences of natural heartwood
and sapwood, along with slight imperfections such as small tight knots (one
allowed every 3'). Average bundle length is 3-1/4'.

1 Common
-
Contains prominent variations in coloration and varying characteristics such
as knot holes (no bigger than 1/4" in diameter) and heavy
mineral streaks. Average bundle length is 2-3/4' or better.

2 Common
- Same as 1 Common with sticker
stain, worm holes, and sound natural variations creating a contrasting appearance. Average
bundle length is 2-1/4' or better.
