	General Description Color - The heartwood varies from deep dark brown to a purplish black while the sapwood is nearly white to tan. Grain - Usually straight and open but occasionally burled or curly. (unfinished Walnut pictured to the right)
	Available Grades Select & Better - Has natural coloration variations found in heartwood and steamed dark sapwood with natural wood characteristics including small tight knots (one 1/4" in diameter every 3'). Average bundle length is 3'. 1 Common - Contains prominent color variations between the light sapwood and dark heartwood including various natural characteristics such as tight knots (one 1/4" in diameter every 3'), checks, worm holes, and pin worm holes. Average bundle length is 2-1/2'. 2 Common - Same as 1 Common with numerous knots and a greater percentage of light sapwood. Average bundle length is 2'.

	Properties Hardness - 22% softer than Red Oak but 26% more stable than Red Oak. See Relative Hardness Comparison Graph Durability - Good strength and shock resistance. Fair resistance to splitting.
