General Description

• Color - The heartwood varies from light to dark reddish brown while the sapwood is light colored to pale with pinkish tones.  Cherry will darken with age and exposure to light.

• Grain - Fine, uniform, and frequently wavy.  May contain small gum pockets.

Available Grades

• Select & Better - Has natural color variations of heartwood with minimal contrasting sapwood.  May include minor imperfections.  Average length of bundle is 3'.

• 1 Common - Contains prominent color variation between sapwood and heartwood with other natural characteristics including streaks, gum pockets, small tight knots, and sapwood.  Average length of bundle is 2-1/2' or better.

Properties

• Hardness - One of the softest hardwoods, it is roughly 26% softer than Red Oak but 33% more stable than Red Oak.  See Relative Hardness Comparison Graph

• Durability - Medium strength and shock resistant.  However, usually used for borders and accents due to it's softness.
